The use of probability theory in the assessment of the reliability of a propped embedded cantilever retaining wall is described. The method of analysis is a numerical one and involves an iterative procedure by which the reliability index π of the system is evaluated. Knowing π, a nominal value of the probabilityof failure of the structure can be obtained. It is shown that a powerful feature of the probability approach is that, whereas the four methods generally used to determine the factor of safety F of a propped embedded wall give four different F values, the same four methods all give the samevalue for β.

L'article décrit l'emploi de la théorie de probabilité dans I'éaluation de la fiabilité d'un mur de souténement cantilever. La méthode d'analyse est numérique et comprend une procédure iterative grâce à laquelle on peut évaluer I'indice de fiabilité β du systéme. Lorsquela valeur de β est connue il est possible d'obtenir une valeur nominale pour la probabilité de rupture de la construction. Bien que les quatre méhodes généralement employées pour déterminer lefacteur de sécuritt F d'un mur cantilever produisentquatre valeurs différentes pour ce facteur, chacune de ces mêmes méthodes donne la même valeur pour β ce qui souligne la grande utilité de la méthode de la probabilité.
