The design, construction and extended performance of a major dewatering system allowed the construction of Sizewell B to take place in the dry over an area of 9 ha within a 56 m deep diaphragm wall enclosure over a four-year period. Foundation excavations were up to 15 m below the water-table. The anisotropic permeability of the Norwich Crag aquifer and foundation was determined by an iterative analytical technique applied to pumping tests at the pre-construction stage. An electrical resistance network analogue model using miniaturized resistors was a primary tool for groundwater drawdown predictions which, with non-linear finite element analyses, led to the establishment of a drawdown—settlement relationship used to control the effects on the adjacent operational Sizewell A. A quantitative assessment of the ingress of water through the as-made diaphragm wall and the underlying London clay cut-off stratum, based on the pumping records, is given.
