Hyperplasticity is an approach to plasticity based on thermo-mechanical principles as originally suggested by Ziegler (1977, 1983) and described by Houlsby (1981), Collins & Houlsby (1997), and Houlsby & Puzrin (2000). The advantage of this approach is that it allows a compact development of plasticity theories, which are guaranteed to obey thermodynamic principles. Another important feature of this framework is that it often allows a hyperplastic model to be interpreted in terms of conventional plasticity.
