The rate of applied stress or strain has been one of the most important time effects known to affect the behaviour of soils. In the present study, particular attention was paid to examining the effect of rate of loading on the secant Young's modulus of undisturbed samples of soft Bangkok clay. This was done by direct comparison of the results obtained from undrained triaxial tests carried out under three different loading conditions: compression, extension and cyclic loading.
