The tensile strength of soil particle has been found to influence the macroscopic behaviour of granular materials (Billam, 1972; Bolton, 1986; Lee, 1992). Following Jaeger (1967), the tensile strength of a single soil grain is usually measured indirectly by compressing the grain between flat platens until failure occurs. McDowell & Amon (2000) showed that for similar loading geometries, Weibull statistics (Weibull, 1951) can be applied to characterise soil particle strength.
