In order to determine the consolidation characteristics of a clay soil, the oedometer test is commonly performed to determine the one-dimensional consolidation characteristics of the material. Although the linear elastic Terzaghi consolidation theory is not strictly correct, as the coefficient of volumetric compressibility and the permeability change during the consolidation process, it is a convenient theory to use to characterise the primary consolidation behaviour of a soil. One of the key parameters to be determined is the coefficient of consolidation.
