Many studies have been carried out to analyse and assess disturbance of clay samples (Baligh, 1985; Jamiokowski et al., 1985; Clayton et al., 1998; Tanaka & Tanaka, 1999; Hight, 2000). Most studies, however, seem to have paid attention mainly to the destructuring and restructuring of the microstructure of clays induced by sampling effects and difference in samplers. There is a lack of studies on sample disturbance due to the drilling technique, vertical stress release when drilling the borehole and extruding of the specimens from the sampling tube in the laboratory.
