Starting from the suggestion by Wheeler & Karube (1995), the role of hydraulic hysteresis in the mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils has increasingly been analysed, on both the experimental and the theoretical sides. Some conceptual mechanical models incorporating hydraulic hysteresis have been proposed in recent years (Dangla et al., 1997; Buisson & Wheeler, 2000; Wheeler et al., 2003). Vaunat et al.
