The initial shear modulus, G0, is widely considered to be a fundamental soil stiffness property, and is a parameter for practical geotechnical problems, both in earthquake engineering and in the prediction of soil–structure interaction. The shear modulus can be measured in triaxial testing with the bender element technique.
