The 61st Rankine Lecture of the British Geotechnical Association was given by Professor John Carter of the University of Newcastle, Australia, on 15 March 2023. The following introduction was given by Professor Mark Randolph of the University of Western Australia.

Good evening, ladies and gentleman.

It gives me tremendous pleasure to have the honour of introducing Professor John Carter, the 61st Rankine Lecturer of the British Geotechnical Association. John and I first met and collaborated at Cambridge, UK in the late 1970s and we have continued as close friends and colleagues since that time.
