The results of 230 consolidation tests on glacial lake clay are described in which the influences of direction and length of drainage, shape of sample, stress conditions of test, and scatter of results have been investigated. The experiments indicate why the rate of drainage under field conditions using sand drains can be three to four times faster than that predicted on the basis of present standard laboratory test procedure.

On y décrit les résultats de 230 essais de consolidation sur argile de lac glaciaire avec investigation sur les influences de direction et de longueur de drainage, la forme de l'échantillon, les conditions d'essais des contraintes et dispersion des résultats. Les expériences indiquent pourquoi la vitesse de drainage dans les conditions, sur place, en employant des drainages de sable, peut ≖tre trois ou quatre fois plus grande que celle prédite sur la base de procédure actuelle d'essai type de laboratoire.
