This paper investigates the response of an offshore calcareous soil—extracted from the vicinity of Goodwyn A platform on the North West Shelf of Australia—to treatment with Portland cement, mixed with other additives, for deep mixing consideration. Laboratory work was undertaken to quantify the improvement of the mechanical properties of the host soil, in terms of strength and stiffness (E, K). The study has proven the effectiveness of the deep mixing technique in improving the engineering properties of the offshore soil; an issue needs to be taken further by the industry for offshore foundations. The distinctive performance of the metal shavings (though added in small proportions) merits some attention in the context of deep mixing techniques. The addition of fly ash to Portland cement improved the mechanical properties remarkably, because of its pozzolanic property.

Cet exposé étudie la réponse d'un sol calcaire offshore venant des environs de la plate-forme Goodwyn A située sur le plateau du nord-ouest australien au traitement au ciment portland mélangé à d'autres additifs, pour la consolidation à mixage profond. Nous avons effectué un travail en laboratoire pour quantifier l'amélioration des propriétés mé caniques du sol hôte en termes de résistance et de rigidité (E, K). L'étude a prouvé l'efficacité de la technique de mixage profond pour améliorer les propriétés industrielles du sol offshore, question qui devra ê tre explorée plus avant par l'industrie pour les fondations offshore. La performance distinctive des copeaux de métal (bien qu'ajoutés en petites proportions), mérite d'être signalée dans le contexte des techniques de mixage profond. L'adjonction de cendre volante au ciment portland a remarquablement amélioré les propriétés mé caniques en raison de sa propriété pouzzolanique.
