> Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Ground Improvement

Figure 2. (a) Time settlement curves of jute drains (note: the times indicated in the legend of the figure refer to the submergence duration of the drain prior to commencement of consolidation testing, expressed in months. In contrast, the X-axis represents the consolidation time in days following loading); (b) time taken for achieving 90% consolidation (in days) plotted against the submerged duration; and (c) normalised drain permittivity with the submerged time Three graphs show settlement, consolidation time, and a reduction factor for jute over submerged time. The graph in panel a plots settlement in millimeters against time in days for jute after 1, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months of submergence. All curves and data series decrease rapidly at first and then gradually approach about negative 60 millimeters. The 1 month curve reaches about negative 61 millimeters by about 80 days. The 4 month curve reaches about negative 61 millimeters by about 120 days. The 6 month curve reaches about negative 61 millimeters by about 150 days. The 9 month curve reaches about negative 61 millimeters by about 180 days. The 12 month, 18 month, and 24 month data continue to about 240, 260, and 300 days, respectively, with final settlements close to negative 62 millimeters. Panel b plots time for 90 per cent degree of consolidation against submerged time. The data increase from about 1.6 days at 1 month to about 6.4 days at 24 months. The fitted relation states t D O C, 90 per cent, 1.53 t raised to 0.4361, for 1 less than t less than 24. Panel c plots psi over psi 0 against submerged time in months. The values decrease from about 2 at 1 month to about 0.009 at 24 months. The fitted relation states psi over psi 0, 1.04 t raised to negative 1.64, for 1 less than t less than 24.
