Health Systems Reform in Europe: The Romanian Experience

Health care has not been immune to the political and social changes taking place across Central and Eastern Europe. The search for a new paradigm for health services has persuaded many of the countries that a mixed economy and/or market‐oriented health care system may be better able to respond to the wide‐ranging demands and pressures arising from the changes. This article describes the current situation of health care in Romania as it endeavours to shift from a highly centralised system to a more decentralised network based on primary health care.
