Purpose

This paper aims to propose a viable model, which is known as the cash waqf-crowdfunding framework (CWCF). This model is expected to address the financial need of higher education institutions in Afghanistan.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is purely using content analysis as its primary methodology. Under this approach, a thorough review of extant literature on the issues of education financing in Afghanistan as well as existing studies and models of CWCF has been reviewed critically and used in the attempt of proposing an alternative model.

Findings

The higher education institutions play an indispensable role in the development of both developed and developing countries. Its ability to produce a knowledge society is not deniable and has played a significant role in empowering people with knowledge and economy. Apparently, the higher education sector nowadays started to face issues related to funding their activities. CWCF model is expected to address the financial need of higher education institutions in Afghanistan. The proposal could help improve the situation that is deteriorating almost all the time.

Originality/value

As the existing schemes of financing are unable to fulfill the financial need of higher education financing in Afghanistan, there is a need to look for a more effective and efficient funding model to help higher education financing in Afghanistan. A CWCF model is proposed with the aim to be an alternative option for the existing education institutions’ financing in Afghanistan.
