Purpose

The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of emotional intelligence, organizational culture and gender on IT project success. Specifically, it explores the mediating role of organizational culture in the relationship between emotional intelligence and project success, and the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between organizational culture and project success.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used a quantitative research methodology in which a cross-sectional survey was used to collect the date from employees working in the IT sector in Jordan. A total of 150 responses were analyzed using linear regression to test the theoretical model developed and examine the model relationships.

Findings

The results indicate a significant positive effect of emotional intelligence on project success. Organizational culture was found to mediate this relationship. Contrary to expectations, gender did not moderate the relationship between emotional intelligence and project success, suggesting that gender may not play a significant role in this context, even within a developing country such as Jordan.

Originality/value

This study contributes novel empirical insights into the roles of emotional intelligence, organizational culture and gender in the success of IT projects in a developing country context. The findings have practical implications for IT organizations seeking to enhance project outcomes by fostering appropriate cultural and emotional competencies, particularly in culturally similar environments.
