Purpose

This paper aims to provide guidelines for addressing barriers and prioritising solutions to enable blockchain technology (BCT) adoption in manufacturing industries.

Design/methodology/approach

This study identifies BCT adoption barriers through a literature survey and inputs from experts. This study uses a spherical fuzzy Bayesian best-worst method and a spherical fuzzy combinative distance-based assessment hybrid framework.

Findings

The findings highlight 30 identified barriers and 18 proposed barrier solutions, prioritized using the multicriteria decision-making hybrid framework. This provides guidance on the areas that can facilitate successful BCT adoption.

Research limitations/implications

Human judgments may produce bias and prejudice, causing some of the barriers to remain unnoticed in the literature review process.

Practical implications

This study will assist practitioners in planning their endeavors efficiently to adopt BCT. Guidance regarding BCT adoption barriers will help in taking necessary preventive measures to evade failures in adoption. It will create new research opportunities for researchers.

Originality/value

A study like the existing one is rare, as it not only identifies adoption barriers but also provides solutions and their prioritization.
