Exceptionally accurate results were recently obtained by Butler, by a new simplified method of design of restrained reinforced concrete columns which was basically an intuitive combination of the variable-stiffness approach developed for steel columns (by Wood) and graphical construction (due to Roik) employing ultimate moment charts. Here an attempt is made to eliminate the graphical construction and to substitute an alternative arithmetical rational procedure, which should be more amenable for development for a code of practice.
