Analytical methods have been developed for predicting the resistance provided by aggregate interlock against sliding-shear deformations at cracks in reinforced concrete. These methods are shown to be capable of predicting test results with a reasonable accuracy, and they are used for an analytical study of the influence on aggregate interlock behaviour of the initial crack width, concrete compressive strength, maximum aggregate size, and the restraint provided against opening. The relative significance of aggregate interlock compared to the dowel action of reinforcing bars in resisting the sliding-shear action across cracks in reinforced concrete was also assessed analytically.
