The paper reports on a proposed double-exponential (double-e) model to describe the strain-softening behaviour of plain concrete. The model describes the strain-softening behaviour via one continuous function and has the advantage of being mathematically efficient, lending itself readily to differentiation and integration. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the applicability and sensitivity of the model. The double-e model has been found to be capable of modelling the strain-softening behaviour typical of plain concrete and appears to have a wide scope of application ranging from brittle responses to elastic–plastic behaviour. In addition, a method has been developed whereby model parameters are determined objectively.
