Some observations on calcium silicate hydrate (I)—tobermorite

Electron-optical study of commercial products containing calcium silicate hydrate has revealed the presence of tobermorite in the form of plates or thin foils. This has apparently been possible as a result of the relatively crumbly nature of the products, enabling samples to be mounted without damage to the fragile crystals. Differential thermal analyses of the materials did not reveal the presence of more than a trace of calcite, although carbon dioxide was present in appreciable quantities.
