A pumping cycle has been designed for unsaturated fragmentary materials which makes use of the pumped material jammed in a tubular sleeve as a piston for forcing forward further material in an outlet barrel. The return stroke of the sleeve is made at rapid acceleration, releasing the material in the forward position and resetting the sleeve for a further cycle. Preliminary performance figures are given, and the means of application to pumping concrete is indicated.
