The effective width of T beams

A method is described for the accurate determination of effective widths of isolated T beams and of T and L beams which form part of a larger structure. This method takes into account the bending stiffness of the flanges in a more satisfactory way than has been used hitherto. Some Tables of effective widths have been calculated for various loading conditions and variations in the geometry of the beams, and comparison is made, where possible, with values produced by the Comite Europeen du Bit on.
