A computer technique is proposed as a means of solving the problem of finding the yield-line pattern which minimizes the collapse load on a slab. A mechanism is assumed and the collapse load calculated as a function of several pattern parameters. A previously constructed sub-routine is then used to minimize this function and thus find the most critical mechanism. Two examples are given; the computation time required is extremely small.
