The paper describes the apparatus and instrumentation that is being used to investigate the effects of triaxial stresses, including pore pressure, upon mass concrete. The specimens are hollow cylinders approximately 1·5 m high × 0·7 m outside diameter × 0·23 m inside diameter, of concrete with a 19 mm maximum aggregate size and a 28 day cube strength of approximately 28 to 42 N/mm2
