A computer model is described which determines the behaviour under load of slender concrete beam—columns of uniform rectangular symmetrically reinforced cross-section. The various modes of deflection and failure are presented for both short-term and sustained load and the predicted results compared favourably with the results of laboratory tests. Computer experiments are reported in which the effects of various structural and material parameters are investigated. The parameters include the distribution of moment along the member, slenderness, the ratio of reinforcement, the cover to the steel, the design strengths of steel and concrete and the magnitude of concrete creep. The empirical CEB/FIP proposals for estimating the strength of slender members are corroborated by the results of the computer experiments.
