The paper describes the results of an investigation into the effect of direction of load application relative to the direction ofcasting upon the tensile strength ofconcrete. A series of different concrete mixes were made in which the type of aggregate, the sand content and the water/cement ratio were varied. The test results show that water gain introduces directional properties into the concrete. The direct tensile strength for stresses acting parallel to the direction of casting was consistently less than that obtained when the stress was applied normal to this direction.
