Synopsis
Predicting the impact performance of prestressed concrete beams can be greatly facilitated if the energy absorption under impact is related to the energy absorption under static loading. Model beam tests are described which investigate the deformational behaviours under static and impact loads and the total work done bring a member to the same limiting damage or deflection due to either type of load. Design charts, based the model test results, suitable for predicting the performance of beams subjected to flexural impact loads then presented.
