An investigation of the deterioration of precast concrete roadside kerbs was inconclusive until a simple qualitative absorption test using an organic solvent indicated the reasons for failure. The test method emphasises absorbent areas formed in the kerbs during manufacture and showed limitations in the sampling method described in BS 340:1979.

It is suggested that the method may have a wider application in production development, quality control and diagnosis of faults.
