Five reinforced concrete compression specimens were tested, each reinforced with a pair of lapped rods. Shortterm longitudinal reinforcement strain distributions were measured using electrical resistance strain gauges installed within the reinforcement. Lap length and rod diameter were both varied. Embedment strain gauges were installed in one specimen to measure internal circumferential concrete strains. Typical reinforcement strain distributions are presented to show the behaviour of the specimens as a whole, and the development of end bearing at the lap ends in detail. The relative contributions of bond and end bearing to force transfer are discussed, and indications are given of the strains developed in the concrete.
