The use of cores to predict the expansion of structures with alkali-silica reaction (ASR) has been questioned elsewhere. In this Paper the use of the mechanical properties of cores to predict the structural behaviour of such structures is also questioned. Laboratory data on the influence of restraint to ASR expansion on the mechanical properties of ASR-affected concrete, and on ultrasonic pulse velocities of columns before and after coring is presented. The results are discussed in relation to the prediction of concrete properties in ASR-affected structures.
