On 31 March 2014 the UK government's building information modelling (BIM) task group published ‘PAS1192:3:2014 – Specification for information management for the operational phase of assets using building information modelling’, as part of the programme to deliver level 2 BIM in the UK. This document marked the fifth in a series of seven standards in support of the level 2 BIM initiative set to become policy in 2016. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) BIM action group is working with the BIM task group to address the needs of infrastructure through BIM implementation. Last autumn's ICE BIM conference was an indicator of the progress made, with client presentations showing real leadership and a desire to improve performance and deliver service excellence to customers. The action group created a ‘BIM heat map’ last autumn (which will be repeated this year), which indicated a wide appreciation of BIM, but many gaps when it came to detailed experience and capability.
