The purpose of this study is to examine descriptions of Taylor or scientific management as utopian, including the context, intent and contradictions in the claims made.
This paper uses a review of texts describing Taylor or his work and influence as “utopian,” alongside wider contextual analysis using Taylor’s writing, relevant contemporary material and other commentary within the academic business and management community.
A search produced 21 texts within relevant academic disciplines which describe Taylor, scientific management, or its application as “utopian.” They can be categorized into four broad themes: “Taylor’s utopian cultural influence(s),” “Taylor’s idealism,” “Rhetoric and myth” and “Social applications and social reform.” The thematic analysis of these texts creates a deeper understanding of how the term “utopia” is used in relation to scientific management, including flaws and contradictions in the usage of the term, as well as groundwork for further analysis.
This paper creates new knowledge with regard to scientific management through its focus on descriptions of its utopianism, assessing claims alongside contemporary material and contexts, including Taylor’s writings.
