The locality of Merthyr Tydfil has recently been transformed by the construction of a new bypass with associated roadway links to the town, and further land developments are being carried out. As part of the revitalization of this historic town, the Rhyd-y-car link footbridge has been constructed. The footbridge is a landmark steel structure incorporating a tall A-frame support which forms an impressive and dramatic gateway to the town. This paper describes the initial concept, planning and design of the scheme and its subsequent construction, including the innovative night-time illuminations.
