Although we cannot predict the shape of things to come for municipal engineering, recommendations can be made to help municipal engineers progress successfully in the future. This paper describes the challenges that municipal engineers face in the twenty-first century and makes suggestions for meeting these challenges in ways that benefit society and the environment, not only locally but also on a global scale. The author uses the experiences of his own municipality in Norway to illustrate the problems and possible solutions.
