He studied materials science at the Crystallographic Institute of the Albert-Ludwig-University Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) from 1973 to 1978. His diploma thesis and later his PhD work were supervised by Professor Dr. Rudolph Nitsche, head of the institute and expert in crystal growth and crystallography, especially in growth techniques from the vapor phase. Main topics of his studies were classical crystallography, solid state physics and solid state chemistry, as well as material synthesis and crystal growth techniques.
