Graphene oxide (GO) is a precursor for the most prospective material – graphene – in the event of top-down approach. Nevertheless, GO promises a variety of applications such as photonics, memory devices, adsorbent, biomaterial, clinical application and so on. This review highlights different methods of GO synthesis in addition to various models of GO. Functional groups on GO sheets are the main contributing factors for properties of composite material system, which sequentially cater for specific application.
