Pumps play a very vital role in keeping most of the process industry functioning. Very often they fail before receiving adequate attention from maintenance staff. The author of this book is an experienced engineer and shows how condition monitoring can be applied to detect internal degradation in pumps and maintaining these on actual conditions rather than any timescale. He has shown the applications of condition monitoring technique i.e. vibration analysis and performance analysis. He has also presented an account of energy saving technique which can be applied to pumps.

The book comprises 11 chapters. In chapter 1, condition monitoring and the role it plays in maintenance is presented. It includes techniques and benefits of condition monitoring. Pump performance and the effects of wear are discussed in chapter 2. It includes pump wear and its effect on performance/efficiency. Some case studies are used to illustrate the concepts. In chapter 3, performance analysis and listing of pumps for condition monitoring is discussed. Type of data needed for analysis and efficiency calculation is described. Optimization of time for overhaul is the subject of chapter 4. An example is included in it. In chapter 5, additional methods of performance analysis for pump condition monitoring are discussed. Basis of vibration analysis of pumps, which includes vibration measurement and severity assessment are the topics of chapter 6. This method is supplemented in chapter 7 which covers advanced methods of vibration analysis of pumps. In chapter 8, other uses of condition monitoring information are presented. Additional methods of condition monitoring are described in chapter 9. Positive displacement pumps, their performance characteristics, condition monitoring by vibration analysis and performance analysis and analysis by wear are discussed in chapter 10. In chapter 11, case studies are presented.

This is a very well written book. The author has vast field experience. This book will be of much use to mechanical engineers, plant engineers and maintenance engineers in the process industry.
