The information systems (IS) success models recommend intention as an alternative to system use and propose that system quality (SQ) will have a significant effect on intention. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between SQ and intention since the empirical results have been mixed with both significant and nonsignificant effects.
This study used a sample of 107 observations gathered from 96 studies published in journals between 2003 and 2024. Meta-regression methods were applied on 47 observations from 44 studies to assess the impact of study characteristics on the results of the relationship between SQ and intention. An extended analysis of all observations was conducted to identify the factors that mediated the effect of SQ on intention.
After controlling for the number of other direct effects on intention, significant differences by geographic region and no significant differences by type of respondents or type of IS were found. Furthermore, the effect of SQ on intention is mediated by other variables such as user satisfaction and perceived usefulness.
This study is useful in generating insights about the relationship as SQ typically belongs to the IS success models whereas intention belongs to the technology acceptance models.
