In recent years, the construction industry has experienced unprecedented development, and the rise in cost factors in various stages of engineering projects has made various project participants pay more attention to cost control (C-C) work. It is urgent to strengthen C-C throughout the entire process of engineering projects to achieve profit goals. To reduce the cost of projects, this study proposes a C-C strategy based on building information modelling (BIM). Firstly, a risk identification algorithm for engineering projects is proposed based on BIM, then a C-C model is constructed based on the risk identification results and a genetic algorithm is added to the model to improve its performance. Finally, a simulation experiment is designed to verify the effectiveness of the method. The results show that the identification accuracy of the risk identification algorithm proposed by the study reaches 99.7%, and the C-C method based on BIM can significantly reduce the cost expenditure of engineering projects. The evaluation method proposed in this study evaluated the effectiveness, scientificity, feasibility and generalisability of the C-C method, with scores above 90. These results show that the application of BIM can effectively realise the C-C of engineering projects, which is of great significance to the smooth development of engineering construction.
