This will be my last editorial for the journal. After three years I will be handing over the editorship to Professor Howard Wright of Strathclyde University. It has been a privilege for me to edit the Structures and Buildings Journal which continues to be very successful in terms of the quantity and quality of the technical papers that it attracts and also in the number of subscribers.

I would like to thank my colleagues on the Structures Advisory Board and the Reviewers who all give freely of their time and expertise for their support and hard work. I would also like to thank the staff in the Journals Department at the Institution for keeping me on the right path and dealing with me in a sympathetic manner!

My time as editor has been eventful, not least with the terrorist attack in the USA on 11th September 2001. Now we have a new outrage in Bali which has resulted in loss of life and destruction of more buildings. I fear that structural engineers will have to reassess their approach to building design in response to these events. I hope that you will continue to submit your thoughts and papers to the journal.
