This book presents the behaviour of a wide range of structural systems, such as simply supported beams, continuous beams, frames, arches, cable structures and also spatial structural systems such as grids, plates, shells, thin-walled beams and box girders. A preliminary design of the principal structural elements in steel, reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete as well as composite is also examined. Other topics such as plastic analysis of skeletal structures, dynamic response of discrete mass structures and shallow foundation design are also covered. Chapters 1, 2 and 3 of the book establish the basic structural behaviour of main construction materials, the principle and fundamental knowledge of statically determinate and indeterminate structural systems, respectively. Each following chapter is devoted to examining the behaviour and design of individual basic structural elements.
A unique feature of the presentation is the integrated approach of structural analysis, mechanics and design of the majority of elements presented. In addition, the good mix between qualitative and quantitative behaviour of structures employed by the author provides the readers with a solid background required to assess output of structural analysis and design software. Numerous illustrative sketches are included to ease the understanding of various topics. Many solved examples are well presented; however, they do not state at the start what is required to be achieved by the end of the solution.
Overall, it is a good book for those engaged in structural analysis and design including undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professional structural engineers.
