This paper describes the general principles of stadium design as applied to the redevelopment of Croke Park, with a particular emphasis on safety. It goes on to discuss the design solutions that were adopted for a number of the key elements. Structural frame was a response to site constraints and maximized the number of spectators accommodated on the lower tier. The corporate level is of composite construction, suspended from the upper concourse beams. The first phase has been completed and the second phase is currently under construction with a completion date of May 2000. Planning for the third and final phase is well advanced with a start-on-site date of October 1999. The result will be an ultramodern stadium for Ireland's greatest sporting events with accommodation for in excess of 84 000 spectators.
