Our transport infrastructure operates in an increasingly challenging environment, due to both climate change and more onerous mechanical loads. As an example of the latter for traffic bridges, during the 12 month period ending March 1997 the freight transported by British-registered lorries operating in the UK totalled 1·97 billion tonnes (Dft, 2017), exceeding the figure for the previous 12 month period by 17%.
