The UK government's 2050 net zero target means it is essential to develop low carbon technologies for transport infrastructure applications. One innovation which shows huge potential to align with that strategy entails glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) decks for road bridges.
GFRP decks, made from glass fibres laid in specific directions in a resin, are 80% lighter than their concrete counterparts, are prefabricated in modules and are corrosion resistant. Hence GFRP modules can be rapidly assembled on site, with little waste, to form a complete bridge deck that is easily craned into position and which requires low maintenance in service....
