Purpose

This study aims to examine the social, conceptual and intellectual structure of science, technology and innovation policymaking using a bibliometrics approach.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducts a descriptive analysis using bibliometric methodologies and social network analytics techniques. The data were retrieved from the Web of Science and analyzed using Excel, VOSviewer and Gephi software.

Findings

Thematic clusters and trends in science, technology and innovation policymaking have transitioned from an exclusive emphasis on economic growth to a more integrated approach that encompasses sustainable development objectives and environmental policies. In other terms, contemporary research in this field is increasingly shaped by the third paradigm, aiming to identify solutions to pressing global challenges. Also, the leading journals in this domain not only cover science, technology and innovation policy research but also maintain a strong interconnection with environmental, energy and sustainability concerns.

Originality/value

This study presents a pioneering, macro level bibliometric analysis of the science, technology and innovation policy field, offering unique insights into leading countries, top journals and subject trends. Furthermore, this study contributes significantly to the literature by identifying research gaps, serving as a valuable guide for policymakers and researchers.
