In this article, the authors describe an efficient process for the fabrication of a composite superhydrophobic coating on Mg-Mn-Ce alloy. The authors show that the preliminary plasma electrolytic oxidation of alloy, with controlled density of surface hydroxyl groups, allows manipulation of the adhesion, structure and water-repelling properties of superhydrophobic coatings, which is formed on top of the Mg alloy. The analysis based on both the electrochemical methods and the evolution of wettability of the investigated surface by different corrosive active media indicates the long-term durability and protective anticorrosion properties of the designed superhydrophobic coatings.
