With close to 20 million tourists a year vising Dubai and with tourism contributing almost 12% to the UAE's GDP it is imperative to develop environmentally responsible tourism and encourage responsible behavior amongst tourists. This research aims to address this challenge by designing a prototype mobile application driven by students at a higher educational institute in Dubai to encourage sustainable tourism. By aligning with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UAE's green agenda and expanding on the existing Visit Dubai app, this project hopes to fill a gap in sustainable tourism app development while fostering student innovation.
This research employs a design thinking methodology emphasizing user-centered development. Initial stages involve analyzing popular travel apps in order to find best practices in sustainability approaches and technological engagement and effectiveness. Content and software integration are informed by industry conversations with app developers such as Dubai based DeviceBee Technologies and Visit Dubai developers. In order to enhance user interaction with sustainability content, students are developing a prototype app that combines gamification, AI and AR. The study combines technical expertise with insights from industry to refine the functionality and educational impact of the app.
The findings highlight two key areas needed in current local tourism apps: limited sustainability-focused content and underdeveloped interactive technologies. This prototype addresses these by integrating real-time sustainability tips (e.g. water conservation, waste reduction) with immersive features like AR-guided eco-tours. Challenges include overcoming tourist skepticism toward green messaging and ensuring data privacy. The app's success hinges on balancing educational value with entertainment and leveraging UAE-specific sustainability initiatives. The research also highlights how student-led innovation can bridge the gap between practical tools and societal trends influencing real-world tourist behaviors.
This study presents an innovative, student-developed tool aimed at promoting sustainable tourism in the UAE, a sector with limited existing app solutions. Only a small number of tourism apps worldwide prioritize sustainability, and even fewer are co-developed by students as part of higher education initiatives. This prototype addresses a need by merging cutting-edge technology with content aligned to SDGs, thereby offering a model that can be replicated in other countries. Its interdisciplinary approach, merging app development, sustainability and experiential learning provides benefits to academia, industry and government.
1. Introduction
The students pioneering this project chose the name Tawazun, for the app, meaning balance in Arabic (توازن), to reflect the app's mission of promoting balance between tourism development and sustainable environmental and cultural preservation. Given the UAE's bourgeoning tourism industry, where it accounted for over 12% of GDP in 2024 (Virani, 2025) finding this balance is now essential. Sustainable tourism is a way to support this balance, as it aims to mitigate the adverse effects of tourism, while enhancing conservation, supporting local economies and preserving culture (MacInnes et al., 2022).
Research suggests that well-designed apps can considerably influence tourist behavior by incorporating sustainability into the user journey (Dickinson and Lumsdon, 2010). As a result, the tourism industry is now being reshaped by mobile technology, offering real-time information and personalized experiences (Wang et al., 2016). Yet, at times, these apps value convenience and big brand popularity over sustainability. In Dubai, the premiere tourism app is Visit Dubai which is both comprehensive and trusted, giving access to individualized travel guides, top attractions, accommodation and food options (see Figure 1), yet still lacks a guide to sustainable tourism in the UAE.

This study addresses these gaps by developing a prototype app through a design thinking approach, led by students from a higher educational institute in Dubai. The app enhances the Visit Dubai framework by integrating augmented reality (AR), gamification, and AI-driven personalization to promote sustainable behaviors (e.g. water conservation, waste reduction) while avoiding “greenwashing” (Font and McCabe, 2017). Through analyzing global best practices and collaborating with industry partners, this project creates a scalable model for sustainable tourism, considering data and privacy concerns (Leung et al., 2013)) and filling a much-needed gap in the market.
Alongside its practical output, this research contributes to the UAE’s Vision 2021 sustainability targets while empowering students with technical and entrepreneurial skills. It also aligns with the UN's SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities), demonstrating how technology can bridge tourism growth with ecological stewardship. By merging innovation, education and sustainability, this project offers a replicable blueprint for destinations worldwide seeking to balance tourism's economic benefits with its environmental responsibilities.
2. Literature review: digital innovation and sustainable tourism in Dubai
The tourism industry is one of the top 10 global revenue sectors, contributing over 12% to the UAE's GDP. Like other global industries, tourism has the potential to create both positive and negative impacts on destinations (Singh et al., 2003). Efforts are underway worldwide, and in the UAE specifically, to make tourism practices more sustainable. The call for sustainable tourism is strongly supported by the United Nations, particularly through the efforts of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the integration of tourism into the sustainable development goals (SDGs) (Twining-Ward, 2017).
As global tourism accelerates, destinations like Dubai face a critical dual challenge: maintaining economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The concept of sustainable tourism has evolved to address these tensions, emphasizing tourism's potential to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs 8 (decent work and economic growth), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 14 (life below water) (Twining-Ward, 2017). However, achieving sustainability through tourism remains complex. Sharpley (2020) argues that while sustainable tourism supports environmentally sound development, it can also reinforce unsustainable growth models unless alternative approaches such as sustainable degrowth are considered. In contexts like Dubai, where tourism plays a central economic role, reconciling growth with ecological limits requires innovative strategies, including the use of digital technologies.
Sustainable tourism seeks to minimize the negative effects of tourism on the environment, culture and economy of destinations. Providing tourists with timely and accurate information about sustainable practices is critical to achieving these goals. Informing tourists about responsible behaviors helps them make choices that align with conserving natural resources, such as water, managing waste effectively, supporting local economies and respecting cultural heritage (Weaver, 2006).
Mobile and ICT-based tools have emerged as promising mechanisms for promoting sustainability in tourism. Chadha et al. (2024) identify mobile applications as key enablers of sustainable tourism, enhancing visitor experience, supporting destination management and promoting responsible behavior. These apps can reduce ecological footprints and encourage cultural engagement. Velasco et al. (2024) demonstrate in a Philippine case study that mobile apps can digitize tourism services, facilitate stakeholder coordination and contribute to broader smart city goals. Earlier work by Ali and Frew (2010) similarly highlights the value of ICT in tourism management, framing digital tools as practical solutions for monitoring impacts and influencing tourist behavior. The integration of mobile platforms into sustainability efforts is increasingly aligned with smart tourism ecosystems (Gretzel et al., 2015), where personalized, real-time services help destinations better manage tourist flows and environmental pressures.
The rapid proliferation of smartphone technology has revolutionized the tourism industry by offering travelers and service providers unprecedented opportunities to enhance the travel experience (Sunio and Schmöcker, 2017). Smartphone applications have become essential tools for modern travel, providing a wide range of services – from booking accommodations to navigating unfamiliar cities (Wang et al., 2016). Among these advancements is the use of smartphone apps to disseminate information about sustainability. Mobile technology enables the real-time delivery of sustainability-related content, making it easier for tourists to access and act upon important information during their travels (Dickinson and Lumsdon, 2010). For example, the official Visit Dubai app offers users a broad range of information about attractions, food, arts, culture and shopping, demonstrating how destination authorities are already incorporating digital tools for visitor guidance.
Looking ahead, emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) hold promise for further enhancing the delivery of sustainability information, making it more engaging and immersive. These technologies can create interactive experiences that educate tourists about environmental conservation while encouraging positive behaviors.
The effectiveness of digital interventions depends on their ability to engage users meaningfully. Gamification – integrating game-like features such as rewards, challenges, and progress tracking – has proven effective in increasing participation and promoting sustainable practices (Werbach and Hunter, 2012). Research across sectors such as energy, health and education shows that gamification can boost motivation and habit formation (Hamari et al., 2014; Sardi et al., 2017). Mohammadian (2025) explores how AI-powered smart nudge marketing can deliver personalized, real-time nudges to influence pro-environmental choices among tourists. Negruşa examines how gamification techniques can be used by tourism organizations to improve sustainable activities by engaging tourists, employees and the local community (Negruşa et al., 2015). However, gamification must be carefully designed to avoid novelty fatigue and over-reliance on extrinsic motivation (Ryan and Deci, 2000). Including cultural relevance, context-aware feedback and adaptive challenge levels is essential to keep tourists motivated and ensure sustained engagement.
Understanding tourist psychology is also key. Studies show that pro-environmental behavior (PEB) in tourists is shaped by a mix of habitual patterns, perceived norms and situational factors such as infrastructure availability (Dolnicar, 2010; Miller et al., 2015; Qin and Hsu, 2022). Urban tourists, in particular, respond to visible cues of environmental concern and moral leadership, both from residents and the surrounding context (Liu et al., 2024). This supports the inclusion of social proof and local storytelling within tourism apps. Putra et al. (2019) identify areas like energy use, waste management and consumerism as core domains for influencing PEB. Calder et al. (2022) add that global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic have changed how travellers assess risk and environmental responsibility, further shaping their behavioral intentions.
Mobile apps are uniquely positioned to deliver interventions at the right time and place. Pitt et al. (2011) argue that smartphones enable real-time data collection, personalized feedback and social sharing, all of which can reinforce sustainable choices. Gretzel and Koo (2021) emphasize the importance of tourism apps that respond dynamically to user location, travel stage, and behavior, making suggestions feel timely and relevant. However, app adoption is not guaranteed. Gupta et al. (2018) identify factors such as perceived usefulness, trust, price sensitivity and prior habits as key to whether tourists will download and use travel apps. In addition, tourists may be more likely to adopt apps that provide visible rewards or social recognition, especially when sustainability is framed in enjoyable and culturally resonant ways (Font and McCabe, 2017).
Challenges associated with using smartphone apps to promote sustainability include tourists being skeptical of sustainability claims, particularly if they perceive them as marketing tactics rather than genuine efforts to protect the environment (Font and McCabe, 2017), as well as concerns over data privacy (Leung et al., 2013). Privacy and responsible data handling are especially relevant in the UAE context, where laws such as the personal data protection law require transparent user consent and careful management of personal data.
Another valuable approach to app development is participatory design. Pravista (2025) argues that involving students and communities in building digital sustainability tools empowers innovation and improves real-world impact. Educational initiatives like app development camps (Ni et al., 2016) and online platforms (Pearce, 2009) demonstrate that community-driven projects can enhance learning while providing scalable, context-sensitive solutions. Alonso-Martínez et al. (2019) find that combining mobile technology with traditional education increases student engagement with sustainability and corporate responsibility. Involving local stakeholders in Dubai, including universities, youth groups and hospitality partners, can ensure the app reflects regional values and addresses real sustainability challenges effectively.
Dubai and the wider UAE have taken significant steps to align tourism growth with sustainability goals. The Dubai Tourism Strategy 2025 explicitly focuses on positioning the city as a leading global destination while balancing environmental protection and community well-being (Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, 2021). This strategy promotes innovation and the use of smart technologies to manage visitor flows, reduce resource consumption and improve waste management. The UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative further complements these aims by targeting substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors, including tourism (Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, 2021; UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, 2022). Mobile applications that encourage sustainable behavior among tourists could be a critical enabler in meeting these policy targets, offering a direct channel for engagement and education.
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered tourism patterns and traveller attitudes, creating both challenges and opportunities for sustainable tourism apps. Heightened health and safety concerns have increased tourists' receptivity to information and behavioral guidance delivered via mobile platforms (Calder et al., 2022). The pandemic also accelerated the adoption of contactless technologies and digital services, making now a prime moment for introducing sustainability-focused apps that build on these trends. However, ongoing uncertainty around travel restrictions and economic conditions means that apps must be flexible and adaptable, offering up-to-date information and personalized options that respond to changing circumstances.
In sum, existing literature strongly supports the use of mobile applications as tools for influencing tourist behavior and promoting sustainability. While challenges remain in adoption and design, well-crafted apps that combine ICT, gamification, personalized nudges, context-aware content and stakeholder engagement offer a powerful path forward. For a rapidly growing tourist destination like Dubai, the strategic use of such digital tools can help align tourism development with the city's broader environmental and social goals, contributing meaningfully to the global transition toward more responsible tourism.
3. App development: A student-led implementation of sustainable tourism technology
3.1 Conceptualization and purpose
The development of Tawazun, an Arabic term meaning “balance” (توازن) represents a deliberate effort to address the disconnect between tourism growth and environmental sustainability in Dubai. Conceived as part of a student innovation project at a higher educational institute in Dubai, the app is designed to promote more responsible visitor behavior through mobile technology. While mainstream travel platforms like Visit Dubai offer rich tourist information, they lack embedded sustainability features. This gap presented a unique opportunity to integrate environmental awareness, behavioral change techniques, and localized insight into a single mobile solution.
As the faculty research lead, the end-to-end development process was supervised, ensuring the initiative aligned with relevant academic objectives, industry standards and the UN SDGs (particularly SDG 11 and SDG 12). The project also contributes to the UAE's national sustainability agenda by encouraging eco-conscious decision-making and enhancing public awareness through digital engagement. The app's splash screen (Figure 2) visually reinforces this identity as an AI-driven sustainable tourism app.

3.2 Methodological approach
A design thinking methodology was applied throughout the app development cycle, fostering user-centered design and iterative refinement. The student team began by conducting benchmarking analyses of existing eco-tourism and travel applications to identify key features, limitations and opportunities for innovation. This comparative research phase was supported by informal interviews with representatives from Visit Dubai's digital division and DeviceBee Technologies, a Dubai-based software firm.
The project followed Agile methodology for implementation, using sprint-based planning to structure development milestones across two academic semesters. Phase 1 focused on delivering a working Proof of Concept (PoC), while Phase 2 was scoped for expanded feature development, AI optimization and enhanced user interactivity.
3.3 Core functional components
The app integrates six core functionalities that reflect a blend of technical sophistication and pedagogical intent. These features are designed not only to improve the user experience but also to support behavior change among tourists through motivation, convenience and education.
3.3.1 AI-driven personalization
At the heart of the app is a basic content-based filtering system, developed using Firebase ML Kit, which tailors eco-friendly recommendations based on user preferences and behavior. For instance, users who frequently visit vegan restaurants or use public transport are algorithmically guided toward similar venues. The AI module compares user activity against a curated database of verified sustainable businesses stored in Firebase Firestore. Though limited in scope in the initial release, the AI model lays the groundwork for future iterations that will incorporate collaborative filtering to improve personalization through behavioral clustering. This will allow the app to adapt over time, enhancing recommendation accuracy as more users engage with the platform.
3.3.2 Gamification for behavioral reinforcement
A basic gamification framework was implemented to encourage sustained engagement and promote real-world eco-friendly behavior. Users are rewarded with points and digital badges for activities such as using public transport or visiting low-impact attractions, as illustrated by the daily reward wheel (Figure 3). These achievements are tracked in a personalized dashboard within the user's profile (Figure 4), which provides a clear overview of the user's progress and rewards.

The gamification design is grounded in behavioral research and aims to reinforce positive habits by linking real-world action with in-app recognition. Planned enhancements for future iterations include dynamic challenges, social sharing functionality and a community leaderboard to further incentivize participation.
3.3.3 Localized eco-insights
The app includes a directory of verified eco-conscious businesses and attractions across Dubai. These locations ranging from solar-powered resorts to local handicraft markets were identified through primary research and verified against third-party sustainability databases where available.
To complement these listings, dynamic eco-tips are triggered when users check in to specific locations. These brief, actionable suggestions such as reminders to avoid single-use plastics or support local artisans serve as micro-interventions that align with the app's educational objectives.
3.3.4 Real-time notifications and event alerts
Utilizing Firebase Cloud Messaging, the app delivers daily push notifications to disseminate sustainability tips and promote local environmental events (e.g. clean-up days, workshops and exhibitions). These messages keep users informed and engaged, even when they are not actively using the app.
Future updates will include geo-fencing capabilities to allow for context-aware notifications, such as alerting users when they are near an eco-certified business or a live sustainability event.
3.3.5 Map-based navigation and location services
A key component of the user interface is the interactive map, powered by the Google Maps API. Sustainable locations are visually mapped, enabling users to explore their surroundings and tap on individual markers for more details. The feature supports on-the-go decision-making and encourages exploration of less-publicized but impactful destinations.
3.3.6 User profiles and progress tracking
Each user has a customizable profile where preferences, eco-behavior logs, saved locations and gamification achievements are stored. This structure provides a more personalized user journey and serves as a reflective tool for tracking one's sustainability impact. Data are stored in Firebase Firestore, allowing for cloud-based synchronization and future integration with analytic dashboards that will visualize user impact over time.
3.4 Technical architecture
The development team selected Flutter as the core development framework to enable simultaneous deployment on Android and iOS. The full stack includes: (see Table 1).

3.5 Reflections and challenges
The app's development process provided a valuable applied learning experience for the student team, while also surfacing important considerations related to ethical tech design.
Technical challenges: Training even a basic AI model in a mobile environment required simplifications and workarounds, particularly around performance and data sparsity.
Data ethics: With the integration of real-time location data, ensuring user privacy became a primary concern. Best practices in data handling and compliance were implemented early in development.
Scope management: Feature creep was a recurring issue, as the student team sought to incorporate complex functions. Faculty supervision helped prioritize feasibility and maintain a focus on core learning outcomes.
3.6 Broader implications
The Tawazun app illustrates how higher education can serve as a site of both technical innovation and civic engagement. The project not only bridges gaps in the tourism tech ecosystem but also reinforces the role of academic institutions in advancing sustainability through experiential learning. It offers a replicable model for future student-industry collaborations and contributes original insights to the intersection of technology, education and environmental stewardship.
4. Impact
Research suggests that technology integration in sustainability education leads to considerable gains in both improved sustainability knowledge and in digital capability (Haraty and Bitar, 2019; Shishakly et al., 2024). Regionally, a recent study involving 357 students from the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), examining the understanding of SDGs initially showed limited awareness of these goals. However, with the introduction of their SAMA mobile platform they recorded a 93% increase in SDG awareness (Almusalami et al., 2024) Nevertheless in the UAE, awareness and participation among residents and students in achieving the SDGs are still low, and there is a shortage of specialized tools and applications to support such activities(ibid.)
To address this the proposed sustainable tourism smartphone app represents a significant innovation with multi-dimensional impacts spanning environmental sustainability, socio-economic benefits, educational enrichment and technological advancement that will be elaborated below.
4.1 Environmental impact
The raison d'être for this project was and will continue to be driven by a need to protect the UAE ecosystem from the environmental pressures generated by increased tourism. These pressures include activities such as increased carbon emissions, increased water consumption, and interference with the natural desert ecosystems (MacInnes et al., 2022). The app's integration of sustainability-focused content, including eco-friendly choices and water conservation tips aims to steer tourist behavior towards a more sustainable vacation. Research suggests that technology integration in sustainability education can result in considerable gains improving sustainability knowledge (Haraty and Bitar, 2019; Shishakly et al., 2024).
Research shows that providing tourists with quick and reliable information through mobile apps can significantly help raise awareness and promote more eco-friendly choices as they travel (Dickinson and Lumsdon, 2010). When newer technology like augmented reality (AR) and gamified features are added, users tend to get more involved, turning the experience into something that's both educational and enjoyable. Therefore, the app in this study makes use of persuasive tech strategies, which have been shown to work well when it comes to encouraging environmentally conscious habits (Fogg, 2003; Hamari et al., 2014).
The environmental impact of an app such as this can lead to broader change across the board. If even a small number of the millions of annual visitors to the UAE make smarter choices considering the environmental impact, the result could ease pressure on ecosystems, wildlife and also reduce emissions. An added benefit is that the app collects valuable data on user behavior, which can be fed to government entities and prove to be extremely useful for policymakers. With that information, they can plan smarter, more targeted strategies to reduce harm and manage resources more effectively (Leung et al., 2013).
However, while the research suggests there is great potential for success, regionally, the evidence remains limited (Afzal et al., 2022). One reason for this is that there are several other factors that come into play such as land reclamation, and artificial island projects contributing to habitat degradation, which are currently outside the scope of this research project (Gladstone et al., 2013) which will require further investigation.
4.2 Socio-economic and cultural impact
Preserving cultural heritage and the socio-economic well-being of a local community is fundamentally linked to sustainable tourism (Weaver, 2006). This app aims to ensure that tourism positively contributes to UAE society through educating tourists about supporting local businesses, respecting cultural norms and engaging with community-based tourism initiatives. An example of this can be found in the old Bastakiya area in Dubai (Figure 5), where heritage preservation and local economic development go hand in hand. Through promoting traditional architecture, local crafts and cultural education, this area of Dubai illustrates the positive impact tourism can have in relation to community well-being and cultural identity.

Additionally this project helps spread economic growth by encouraging people to spend in ways that support local businesses instead of big tourism companies. It also teaches people about Emirati culture and history, which helps them understand and respect different traditions and builds stronger connections between people from different backgrounds (MacInnes et al., 2022). The app also helps communities get involved, which makes tourism development fairer and more inclusive.
4.3 Educational impact on students and the academic community
A key strength of this project is its multi-faceted approach that brings together different fields of study. Students working on this project have created the app using a design method that focuses on people's needs. This lets them learn by doing, connecting what they learn in class with real-world experiences. From this they develop a range of skills in sustainable travel, building apps and developing new technologies like augmented reality and artificial intelligence. All of these skills are transferable to today's job market (Sunio and Schmöcker, 2017). It also supports students' soft skills development such as critical thinking, coming up with new ideas and developing an entrepreneurial mind set. Importantly, it shows students how technology can be used to help society and the environment. This kind of experience helps meet the UAE's education goals by producing graduates who are skilled, have strong ethics and care about sustainability.
From an academic point of view, this work adds to the growing knowledge about using technology in sustainable tourism, especially in the Middle East where there is limited research on this topic. Sharing the results at conferences and in articles will not only help develop the institution's profile but will support other initiatives further afield.
4.4 Industry and governmental impact
This app was developed specifically for the UAE market to address an important gap in the country's tourism needs. While the current Visit Dubai app provides relevant information, it lacks detailed content on sustainability and advanced interactive features. This app offers a practical and adaptable solution for businesses in the tourism sector that want to attract travelers who value environmental and social responsibility. Tourism companies in the UAE, such as Pink Rock Tourism and Sougat Travel and Tourism, could incorporate the app into their services to stand out in a market increasingly focused on eco-friendly and socially responsible choices. It could also benefit government groups by enabling them to share sustainability messages, educate visitors and collect data on visitor behavior. This data could help inform better policies for sustainable tourism.
UAE’s Vision 2021 is a key driver of national policy, demonstrating the government's commitment to sustainable and innovative development. Of relevance here is pillar four “United in prosperity: A nurturing and sustainable environment for quality living” (Vision 2021: The Official Portal of the UAE government, para (1) which this initiative supports. Collaborating with companies like DeviceBee Technologies and building on lessons from the Visit Dubai app enhances the project's relevance and increases its chances of widespread and effective adoption.
4.5 Societal and community impact
Beyond helping the environment and the economy, the project also brings people together in a bigger way when it comes to caring about sustainability. The app uses fun elements like games and augmented reality to make traveling in a sustainable way both easy and fun, which could lead to more people in the area and visitors becoming more aware and caring about the environment.
When the local community helps create and spread the app's content, it brings people closer and gives more power to local voices. This makes sure that tourism grows in a way that matches the values and wants of the community. This way of working together can create a positive cycle where people feel more empowered to take care of their environment (Lukoff and Zhang, 2025).
5. Challenges and mitigation
Given the potential effects are considerable, the project is aware of some challenges, particularly that tourists could be doubtful about sustainability promises and harbor worries about data privacy (Font and McCabe, 2017; Leung et al., 2013). To help the app succeed and build trust, it is important to be open and honest, use real evidence and follow privacy rules carefully.
For successful implementation, the app needs to be easy to use and accessible for different groups of people as not all tourists have the same access to technology or the same digital capabilities. This will help reach more people and make sure that everyone can access it.
While this study introduces an original prototype, its scope remains limited without broader empirical testing or quantitative validation of the app's impact. Previous research shows that the effectiveness of sustainable tourism technologies becomes clear only through long-term behavioral tracking and repeated user evaluation (Sunio and Schmöcker, 2017). In the next phase, pilot trials are planned with different tourist groups to evaluate usability and potential behavioral changes. The researchers also acknowledge that technological, cultural and operational challenges, such as gaps in digital literacy, privacy concerns and differing views on sustainability may affect adoption (Font and McCabe, 2017; Leung et al., 2013). To address these issues, participatory co-design workshops will be run to ensure the app is inclusive and culturally relevant (Smit et al., 2024). Although the current version is tested within an academic setting, its modular design enables easy adaptation to other destinations and potential integration with smart city systems, enhancing its scalability (Gretzel et al., 2015). Furthermore, this study recognizes its contextual limitations and obstacles to changes in behavior. In this respect, we can refer to the ideas of Yachin et al. (2024) and Crabolu et al. (2024) to frame our approach. Yachin et al. (2024) discuss nudge interventions in tourism that gently steer tourist behaviors toward climate-friendly choices while preserving enjoyment. They recognize critiques that nudging alone may not cause deep mindset shifts but see it as a useful tool for mitigation and a starting point for longer-term cultural change. Incremental approaches of this sort (Crabolu et al., 2024), attempt to focus efforts on what is contextually feasible, with the potential to evolve as the capacity grows.
6. Conclusion
The Tawazun app exemplifies how student-centered innovation can result in more responsible forms of tourism, especially in such popular cities like Dubai where the environmental and cultural pressures that accompany the rapid growth in tourism demand thoughtful, practical solutions. This endeavor presents a viable solution by integrating a mobile application that incorporates sustainability into the routine experiences of travelers.
What distinguishes Tawazun from numerous commercial tourism applications is its ethical foundation and community-oriented approach. The application encourages engagement with small enterprises and cultural understanding through introducing less popular heritage sites. Thus, encouraging travel to lesser known sites and more meaningful experiences that support the local community and economies. In this way, the application is well-aligned with the tenets of sustainable tourism.
From an educational standpoint, as a hands-on real-world learning activity, this project exemplifies experiential learning bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical application. With skills such as coding, design, gamification and AI integration being developed. The application's focus on gamification, real-time notifications and tailored recommendations underscores an increasing acknowledgment that technology possesses the capacity to influence decision-making processes. Students also put into practice the phases of research and development; employing a design thinking framework that prioritized user experience while integrating sustainable practices into the fundamental features of the application. Equally important, students were challenged to think critically about data ethics, user trust, and the cultural dimensions of sustainability. These experiences contribute to a broader educational objective: producing graduates who are not only technically skilled but socially and environmentally aware.
Nonetheless, the use of such technologies is not without obstacles. Ongoing cynicism toward sustainability initiatives and concerns over data privacy require careful management through transparent policy frameworks and continuous stakeholder engagement. Additionally, ensuring the app's accessibility across diverse demographic and technological competencies is essential to maximize its adoption and impact.
Significant discussions in critical tourism studies highlight how so-called “local experiences” can be commoditized and potentially detrimental. Studies indicate that inadequate regulation of experiential tourism can lead to unforeseen consequences such as gentrification, cultural disruption and environmental strain (Salazar, 2012). According to Dredge and Jamal (2015), the pursuit of authenticity can alter a location's nature and impose new demands on its inhabitants. Considering these insights, the project adopts a balanced and progressive perspective on sustainable tourism as a process that evolves instead of a blueprint to be copied (Bramwell and Lane, 2014). The Tawazun prototype addresses these criticisms by incorporating participatory design and continuous community input throughout its development. These methods contribute to empowering local communities and minimizing harmful effects by enabling residents to participate in decisions regarding the development of tourism and its beneficiaries (Hall, 2019). It is recognized that digital tools alone cannot address profound economic disparities, but when developed ethically and in collaboration with local partners, they can help foster more responsible and inclusive tourism aligned with the UAE's sustainability objectives.
In essence, Tawazun exemplifies more than a mere technological solution; it represents a collaborative endeavor bridging academia, students and industry to address complex socio-environmental challenges. As global tourism (UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, 2022) cntinues to expand, innovations of this nature will be instrumental in fostering sustainable travel practices. This initiative demonstrates that thoughtfully designed technology can transcend mere utility to effect meaningful and culturally sensitive change.
