The recently completed 94 km extension of the M40 motorway from Oxford to Birmingham passes through some of the finest countryside in England and great emphasis was given to aesthetic and environmental aspects in the design. This Paper deals with the design of the many bridges. A section of the route overlies seams of the North Oxfordshire coalfields. Structures at risk were designed to accommodate the maximum predicted ground movements and the Paper outlines the different solutions adopted by the two consultants.
