The equipment and techniques used by British Rail Research in their track recording car to detect rail defects are described. Inspections can be performed at 70 km/h on good quality continuously welded rail (CWR) in the Ultrasonic Test Unit (UTU). Computerization is improving the speed and efficiency of track maintenance.
